At Newly, we are big on technology (obviously!) and utilising it in a way that makes it easier for you to find great work in Aged Care, Disability Support and Nursing. For example, through our online database, we are able to match you to suitable jobs, based on your needs, location and qualifications.
However there is one thing in particular that we think is especially useful for the job search: video recording technology. When used in the right way, this tool can give you that extra boost to stand out from everyone else.
Through your Newly profile we have this technology implemented to allow you to easily record your own video introduction. Combined with a complete and up-to-date Newly profile, this can give employers further insights to who you are, providing you with a platform to express yourself in a way that written words can’t.
If you have a smartphone or a webcam, creating a video introduction is really easy to do and can be completed through your profile on our website. To help you through this process, follow these 5 tips to ensure that your video introduction is one that stands out to employers!
Set the scene
This video is all about you, so make sure there are no distractions in the background. Choose a plain backdrop like a white wall and ensure that the room is well lit. Check the camera lens on your phone or computer is smudge free and make sure the battery is charged so it doesn’t run out in the middle of a perfect take!
Look the part
Take the effort to present yourself in the best possible way, as though you’re going in for an actual job interview. Make sure you dress professionally in neat, clean, well-ironed clothes. Comb your hair and clean your nails as all these things will show up on video. Also make sure your clothes don’t conflict with the background you choose. Stay away from reds, yellows and fluorescent colours if you can as they don’t come across well on screen.
Practice your lines
The purpose of the interview is to tell them about yourself: why you like to work as a nurse, carer or support worker, what experience you have had and the reasons why you think you’d make a good fit in this industry.
Write a brief script covering those above points and practice it a few times to make sure it works as spoken words. Once you are confident with the words, practice a couple more times so it feels easy and sounds natural.
Remember the video interview should only be a couple of minutes in length at the most!
Body language
A few things to remember when delivering your introduction:
- Look directly into the camera – not the screen – it’s just like maintaining eye contact in really life.
- Focus on speaking clearly. It is important that every word is understood.
- Smile!
Get feedback
Get a friend or family member to review the video before uploading it. Make sure the sound is audible and you have met the objectives of the introduction video successfully – to show the employers that you’re the best person for the job.
If you are proud of your introduction video let us know! We would love to show some great examples to our Newly community.
