So you’ve landed your dream job and you’re preparing for your first day. You’re probably feeling excited or nervous…maybe even both!
Remember: first impressions count, and your new employer is going to be watching you carefully during those initial shifts. So what can you do to make sure you start as positively as possible? Well, the following tips are a great place to start.
Don’t just be on-time; be early
If you’re late on day one, you’re probably not going to get to day two.
Take a little time to think about how you’re going to get to work: car, public transport, walking? Plan the route as well as some alternative routes. If there’s traffic, or if a train line is out of service, you’ll be glad you did this. And make sure you plan a little extra for delays, it’s always better to be 30 minutes early, than 30 minutes late. Once you get more familiar with your route you can sleep in a bit more!
Look the part
Take pride in your appearance. If your clothes are creased and there’s a stain on your shirt, people are going to judge you negatively from the outset. It’s not a great way to start any new relationship.
Spend a little time the day before your first shift preparing the clothes you are going to wear. Make sure they are comfortable, clean and well-ironed. If you look good, you’ll also feel more confident.
Sleep tight and eat right
You’re no use if you’re tired and hungry.
Make sure you get plenty of sleep before your first shift and think about what food you will need. Prepare some food in advance and pack a couple of energy-boosting snacks for those moments when you need a pick-me-up. Don’t assume that food will be easy to buy on the first day.
Understand what is being asked of you
You are in a new role, in a new environment, working with new people. Everyone has their own way of describing and doing things. For the first few weeks, make sure you are clear of what is being asked of you by confirming work requests from your boss and asking for clarification on anything you are not sure about. You’re more likely to be forgiven for asking a question than making a mistake.
Mind your manners
You may be feeling stressed and nervous, but there’s no excuse for being rude, discourteous, or unhelpful. Keep a smile on your face. The simple act of smiling will get your endorphins pumping and give people a great first impression.
And be sure not to gossip: it’s unprofessional and will most likely come back to haunt you.
Keep your super in one place
Having multiple super accounts means paying multiple fees. Make sure your hard earned cash is working for your future.
Every dollar counts- by consolidating your super you can avoid paying unnecessary fees and ensure your super is working for you.

Now, breathe…
Everyone’s first day in a new role is nerve-wracking because of the unknown. But you really can minimise that stress by being as prepared as possible. Control the things you can control and you’ll be able to handle the other stuff far more easily.
When you arrive for your first shift, take a deep breath and walk in with a smile on your face. Then, you’ll be ready for anything!
Most of these things are common knowledge, but it whether this is your first job, or your 10th, a refresher every now and again can do wonders. Especially in the hustle and bustle of your first day at a new job!
